What is Package Performance Testing?

Packaging performance tests are procedures designed to determine the resistance and integrity of packaging against physical and environmental influences during the transport, storage, and use of medical devices. Through these tests, we aim to scientifically demonstrate the maintenance of packaging sterility and product safety.

These tests are conducted in accordance with international standards, particularly ISO 11607 and ASTM.

Key Packaging Performance Tests for Medical Devices

  1. Microbiological Tests: For sterile medical devices, the microbiological barrier properties of the packaging are of paramount importance. Microbiological tests determine whether the packaging provides adequate protection against microbial ingress, thereby confirming the product's sterility shelf life.
  2. Dye Penetration – Leak Test: This test involves applying a dye solution to the impermeable areas of the packaging. The detection of any leakage indicates insufficient packaging integrity, which is critically important for sterile products.
  3. Burst Test: The burst test measures the packaging's resistance to internal pressure. Air is introduced into the package in a controlled manner, increasing the pressure. The maximum pressure value the packaging can withstand is determined. This test demonstrates the packaging's suitability for sudden pressure changes that may occur during transport or storage.
  4. Bubble Test: The bubble test is primarily used for sterile packaging to detect hidden leaks. The package is submerged underwater and subjected to controlled air pressure. In the event of leaks, bubbles form on the water surface. This test is effective in detecting small, invisible holes or weaknesses.
  5. Seal Integrity Test: This test is used to verify the strength and integrity of the packaging's sealing areas (seals). The sealed areas must be carefully examined for cracks, openings, or leaks, with particular attention to maintaining sterility.

Why Should You Conduct Packaging Performance Testing?

Packaging performance tests are a critical component for medical device manufacturers to ensure regulatory compliance and product safety. The main benefits of these tests include:

  • Preservation of product sterility and safety
  • Compliance with international standards and regulations
  • Reduction of risks associated with transport and storage damage
  • Prevention of product recalls and in-use risks
  • Enhancement of reputation and customer trust
