Surfactant Analyses
The primary function of detergents is to dissolve and remove dirt and grease from surfaces. The main components responsible for this action are surface-active agents (surfactants). It is crucial to test the type and quantity of these substances to determine the detergent's cleaning power, foam formation, and environmental compatibility.
What are Surfactants?
Surfactants are chemical compounds that facilitate an interaction between water and dirt, thereby promoting the detachment of fats and particles from surfaces. Concurrently, they contribute to the detergent's foam formation and directly influence its cleaning efficacy.
Surface-active agents are categorized into four groups: anionic, cationic, non-ionic, and amphoteric surfactants. The type of surfactant used is significant depending on the product's application area and skin contact.
Why is Surfactant Testing Necessary?
- Measurement of Cleaning Performance
- Verification of Label Claims (e.g., contains 15% active ingredient)
- Compliance with Legal Regulations and Environmental Standards
- Detection of substandard or counterfeit products
- Preparation of technical documentation for export and regulatory compliance
Key tests performed in our laboratory
- Determination of anionic active ingredients: ISO 2271
- Determination of free alkalinity or free acidity: ISO 4314
- Determination of alkalinity: ISO 4315
- Determination of inorganic sulfate content: ISO 8214
- Determination of high molecular weight cationic active ingredients: EN ISO 2871-1
- Determination of low molecular weight cationic active ingredients: EN ISO 2871-2
- Determination of non-ionic active agents: ISO 2268
