Food Contact Materials – Migration Analysis
What is the objective of migration analysis for substances and materials that come into contact with food?
Migration analysis for substances and materials that come into contact with food is performed to determine whether harmful substances transfer from these materials into food. This analysis is of great importance for public health, food safety, and regulatory compliance.
Migration, which can occur with materials such as plastic, metal, ceramics, rubber, and paper, can affect the quality of food and have negative impacts on human health. For this reason, migration tests are of great importance in food production and packaging.
Methods of Migration Analysis
In migration analysis, the material is first brought into contact with a food simulant. This allows for the simulation of migration under realistic food conditions. During the analysis, parameters such as temperature, time, and pH value are meticulously controlled.
Subsequently, the resulting extract is analyzed using advanced analytical techniques such as chromatography (GC, HPLC) and mass spectrometry.
