ISO 18416: Candida albicans in cosmetic products

The microbiological safety of cosmetic products is not only legally mandated, but also a responsibility of the manufacturer and a legal requirement. Particularly for products applied to sensitive areas such as skin, lips, or the eye area, the presence of pathogenic microorganisms can pose health risks. In this context, the ISO 18416 standard provides an internationally recognized method for the detection of Candida albicans in cosmetic products.

What is ISO 18416?

ISO 18416 is a test method for the qualitative determination of the presence of the yeast Candida albicans in cosmetic products, which can pose a risk to human health. This analysis assesses whether the product is microbiologically safe.

Why is Candida albicans tested for?

  • Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogen that can cause skin infections.
  • In moist and nutrient-rich cosmetic products, the risk of proliferation is high.
  • It is particularly crucial to detect it in baby products, eye care products, and personal care products.
  • For reasons of product safety, brand image, and regulatory compliance, conducting this test is mandatory.

General Test Procedure Steps

Sample Preparation

  • The cosmetic product is diluted accordingly.
  • Neutralizing agents are added if necessary.

Enrichment Phase

  • The sample is inoculated into Soybean-Casein Digest Broth (SCD) or an appropriate liquid medium.
  • Incubated at 20–25 °C for 2–5 days.

Selective Medium

  • The enriched sample is subcultured onto Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) or an appropriate fungal medium.
  • Colony development is observed for 2–5 days.

Identification and Confirmation

  • Typical Candida albicans colonies are white to cream-colored.
  • If necessary, confirmation is performed using biochemical tests or rapid identification kits.

Result

  • If no colony is visible → "Candida albicans was not detected."
  • If a colony is present → The result is "Candida albicans positive."

In which products is this test applied?

  • Skin Care Products (Cream, Lotion)
  • Shampoos and Shower Gels
  • Eye Area Products
  • Lip Balms, Lipsticks
  • Baby Cosmetics
  • Hygienic Cosmetic Products

Significance of ISO 18416 Analysis

  • It ensures the microbiological quality of cosmetic products.
  • It plays a crucial role in the safety assessment prior to a product's market launch.
  • It enhances consumer confidence and brand value.
