Detergent Powder Analyses: All Required Tests for Performance, Safety, and Regulatory Compliance

Detergent powder is one of the most commonly used products for cleaning in households or industrial settings. To enable manufacturers to bring safe and effective products to market, comprehensive tests regarding chemical, physical, ecological, and packaging compatibility must be conducted. These analyses are not only essential for quality control but also crucial with regard to EU regulations, environmental criteria, and consumer safety.

Physical and Chemical Analyses

pH Value (1% or 10% solution): Determines the acidic/basic structure of the detergent solution. This is an important parameter concerning skin contact risks, cleaning performance, and washing stability.

Moisture/Dry Matter Determination: The shelf life, flowability, and dissolution rate of detergent powder directly depend on its moisture content. Excessive moisture can lead to clumping. The dry matter content is used to calculate the active ingredient content.

Density (Bulk Density): Determines the volumetric properties of the detergent. This is an important parameter for packaging volume, dosage recommendations, and product transport conditions.

Assay of Active Ingredient

Anionic Active Ingredient: Determines the content of ingredients such as SLES and LAS. It is the most important indicator of cleaning power.

Non-ionic Active Ingredient: Influences fat-dissolving and foaming performance.

Total Active Ingredient: Indicates the overall performance of the detergent.

Enzyme Activity Analysis (optional): For enzyme-based products, protease, amylase, lipase, and cellulase activities are tested.

Heavy Metal Analysis: Controls toxic elements that may originate from raw materials. Measured using ICP-MS/ICP-OES; Pb, Cd, Hg, As.

Performance and Functional Tests

Foam Test: The amount of foam generated and its stability during detergent use are measured.

Solubility Test: The dissolution rate of the detergent powder in cold/warm water is determined. This test evaluates the formation of deposits and granule integrity.

Cleaning Performance Test: Conducted on soiled textile samples. The cleaning efficacy against tea, sebum, blood, coffee, and grease stains is measured comparatively.

Biodegradability (OECD 301B): Measures the environmental impact of surfactants. This is mandatory for EU environmental standards and Ecolabel requirements.

Microbiological Analyses

Due to the low water activity of detergent powders, the risk of contamination is low; however, control is particularly important for enzyme-containing products.

Stability and Shelf-Life Tests

Accelerated Stability Test: Under conditions of high temperature and humidity, clumping, color change, odor stability, pH change, and active ingredient decomposition are observed.

Packaging Compatibility Test: The interaction between detergent powder and packaging is evaluated:
